MyMedicare: What It Means for You and Your Care

MyMedicare: What It Means for You and Your Care

MyMedicare is an Australian Government initiative designed to strengthen the relationship between patients and their regular general practice. It aims to support continuity of care, something we know is central to better health outcomes.

What is MyMedicare?

MyMedicare allows patients to formally register with their preferred general practice and GP.

This registration helps ensure your care is:

  • Consistent
  • Coordinated
  • Centred around your usual doctor and clinic

It does not lock you in, you can still attend other practices if needed.

Why Continuity of Care Matters

Research consistently shows that seeing the same GP over time is associated with:

  • Better chronic disease management
  • Fewer hospital admissions
  • Improved preventative care
  • Stronger doctor–patient relationships

MyMedicare supports this model by recognising and strengthening your connection with your usual practice.

What Are the Benefits?

For patients, registering with MyMedicare may provide:

  • Improved access to longer telehealth consultations (where clinically appropriate)
  • Better coordination of care, especially for chronic or complex conditions
  • More personalised care planning
  • Access to additional funded services over time, as the program expands

For practices, it supports:

  • Better understanding of the patient population
  • Improved care planning and follow-up
  • A more sustainable model of general practice care

Who Should Consider Registering?

MyMedicare is particularly beneficial if you:

  • Have a regular GP or practice
  • Live with chronic or ongoing health conditions
  • Prefer continuity and a long-term care relationship
  • Use your GP as your central point of care

How to Register

Registration is simple and can be done:

  1. Online via your Medicare account (through myGov)
  2. In person at your general practice

You will need to nominate:

  • Your preferred practice
  • Your usual GP (where possible)

Our team can assist you with this process if needed.

A Note on Your Choice

Registering with MyMedicare does not restrict your access to care elsewhere. It simply helps formalise your relationship with your usual practice so we can provide more coordinated, patient-centred care.
